Thattekkad
Thattekkad, to be precise, Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is the first of its kind in Kerala. This bird haven is named after its discoverer who was Indias eminent ornithologist. A couple of hours drive away from Kochi, Thattekkad shelters about 253 bird species including both indigenous as well as migratory birds. Some of the prominent indigenous species are Malabar Grey-Hornbill, Woodpecker, Parakeet, Indian Rollers, Cuckoos, Crow Pheasants, Jungle Nightjars, Grey Drongos, Baya Sparrows, Indian Hill Mynas, Sunbirds, Darters, etc. While rare birds like the Ceylon Frog-Moth, Rose-Billed Roller, Crimson-Throated Barbets, Fairly Bluebirds, Night Herons, can also be seen here.
